DCCC Statement on Trump’s Visit to Michigan’s 7th Congressional District

“Tom Barrett broke every promise he made to Michiganders, instead rubber stamping Trump’s agenda making life more expensive. Barrett is a fraud who voted twice to allow the forever war in Iran, gutted health care, and backed reckless tariffs – sticking Michigan families with the bill for higher prices everywhere from at the pump, in the doctor’s office, at the grocery store, and more. This November, Michigan voters will reject Broken Promise Barrett for selling them out.” 

Broken Promise Barrett’s Record Failing Michigan:

• THEN: Barrett stood in front of a gas pump and told Michiganders in his own words,  “when I’m elected to Congress… we’ll get gas under control so that this will be a lot more affordable for families like yours.”

• NOW: Barrett voted TWICE to allow the Iran War, covering for Trump and sending more money and resources to an unpopular war raising prices at the pump.

• THEN: Barrett told Michiganders he’d put them first and work to lower their costs.

• NOW: Barrett backed the Big, Ugly Bill that gave his wealthy, special interest donors a payday while gutting health care, raising premiums, and failing to lower costs for Michigan families.

• THEN: Barrett told Michiganders he understood they’re “plagued” by “high food prices” and “high home heating prices.”

• NOW: Barrett voted eight times to rubberstamp the tariffs raising grocery prices, undermining Michigan’s manufacturing, and threatening small businesses. And he voted to gut SNAP and slashed programs to help lower energy bills.

• THEN: Barrett said he’d stand up for Michigan’s veterans.

• NOW: Barrett proudly backs a bill that could put billions in VA funding for veterans’ health care on the chopping block. Barrett’s bill would “put more than $100 billion in annual VA medical funding on a three-year countdown clock” and defended DOGE cuts undermining care at the VA.

• THEN: Barrett promised he’d be an independent voice working for Michigan’s 7th district.

• NOW: Barrett sold them out to work for himself. He got caught funneling tens of thousands of dollars in campaign cash to companies his wife worked for, all after she was hired, and faced scrutiny for paying himself over $20,000 in mileage reimbursements that far exceeds the average reimbursements of the rest of the Michigan delegation – meaning that if he were reimbursing himself at the standard rate, he “drove enough campaign-related miles to circle the Earth once with about 7,000 miles left to spare.”

THE BOTTOM LINE: Tom Barrett’s record is littered with broken promises. Instead of making life better for Michigan families, Barrett rubber stamped the Trump agenda making everything more expensive while finding time to work the system to benefit himself. Michiganders will reject Broken Promise Barrett for selling them out.
