DCCC Statement on Why Congressman Rob Wittman is One of the Most Vulnerable Republicans in Congress

After spending nearly 20 years in Washington selling out hardworking Virginians, it’s never been more certain that career politician Rob Wittman is one of the most vulnerable Republicans in Congress.

DCCC Spokesperson Eli Cousin:
“Career politician Rob Wittman has spent nearly 20 years in Washington selling out hardworking Virginians while he and his billionaire backers get richer. Wittman promised Virginians he would lower costs and protect their health care, but instead voted to gut Medicaid, jack up premiums and electricity bills, and risk shuttering rural hospitals like Rappahannock General. He has come to represent everything that’s wrong with DC politicians, and he has made himself uniquely vulnerable by rubberstamping a politically toxic agenda that is only making life harder for working families.”

Here’s why Wittman is uniquely vulnerable entering 2026:

  • Virginia’s 1st Congressional District has consistently trended towards Democrats over the course of the past three presidential elections. VA-01 was one of just 19 districts in the nation that moved to the left in 2024 at the presidential level.
  • Wittman will face heavy scrutiny for lying to Virginians after he promised to protect health care but instead voted for the largest cuts to Medicaid in history. Wittman joined a letter to House leadership alleging he opposed gutting Medicaid, only to turn around and vote to gut the program by roughly $1 trillion.
  • Now, Wittman is lying about the impact of his vote and has faced protests for breaking his promise to Virginia voters.
  • Wittman backed DOGE cuts that have had a devastating impact on Virginia’s economy and hardworking families. He has said that DOGE can “bring some value” and voted to codify DOGE cuts into law. Yet Wittman declined to attend an in-person town hall in his district to explain his support.
