DCCC Statement on Party-Line Vote to Adopt New North Carolina Congressional Map

Today, on a party-line vote, Republicans in the North Carolina State Senate adopted a new congressional map after a three-judge panel unanimously rejected the standing version.

In their decision, the panel explained, ”the 2017 Enacted Maps, as drawn, do not permit voters to freely choose their representative, but rather representatives are choosing voters upon sophisticated partisan sorting.”

“North Carolina state Republicans have admitted what the state courts made unanimously clear: Republicans for years held seats based on an unacceptable partisan gerrymander,” said DCCC spokesperson Sarah Guggenheimer. “We are confident that the eventual 2020 map will lead to a more democratic and representative state, and will result in the re-election of all of our sitting Representatives and the addition of new Democratic seats.”
