Today, Republican State Attorneys General with the backing of the Trump Administration will argue in Federal Court that protections for Americans with pre-existing conditions are unconstitutional. A main argument of the states and Trump administration is that because the GOP tax bill gutted parts of the Affordable Care Act, the protections for Americans with pre-existing conditions are now unconstitutional.
DCCC Communications Director Meredith Kelly released the following statement:
“House Republicans voted last year to strip away protections for Americans with pre-existing conditions like cancer, asthma and diabetes, and now Republicans are suing. The public spoke out and defeated the Republican repeal effort last year, so cynical Republicans are making an end run around the American people to overturn protections for pre-existing conditions in the courts.
“This baseless case once again shows that as long as Republicans have full control of Washington, affordable healthcare for hardworking families is at risk. Democratic candidates across the country are running to protect Americans with pre-existing conditions, make healthcare more affordable and prescription drugs cheaper while their Republican opponents have sided with big insurance and pharmaceutical companies over middle class families.”
We have already seen Democratic candidates in every part of the country airing ads focused on pre-existing conditions and affordable healthcare. With polling showing that Republicans are extremely vulnerable on the issue of pre-existing conditions, this will continue to be a central theme in the midterms.
