Below is a statement from DCCC Spokesman Jermaine House on the recent remarks by Republican Robert Pittenger of North Carolina. Robert Pittenger joined the cast of characters like Donald Trump and Steve King, who this week leveled racist attacks at the African American community.
“Robert Pittenger’s abhorrent remarks sound more similar to the rhetoric of white supremacists than that of a sitting U.S. Congressman,” said Jermaine House of the DCCC. “When House Republicans echo the voices of the ‘alt-right’ movement, it’s the responsibility of Speaker Paul Ryan and his leadership to set the gold standard and quickly denounce such remarks so it doesn’t become common place.
“In June, African Americans in DC’s Anacostia community welcomed Speaker Ryan’s outreach. It’s now time he gets the political courage to defend that same community from the racist attacks of those Members in his ranks.”
