In light of the news that Speaker Ryan is mulling retirement in 2018, DCCC Communications Director Meredith Kelly released the following statement:
“There’s nothing more dangerous than a man with nothing left to lose. After attempting to rip away insurance and increase healthcare costs for millions of Americans, and fighting to increase taxes on middle class families, Speaker Ryan has exposed himself as deeply out of touch with hardworking Americans and unable to clean up the swamp he helped create.
“Now, Speaker Ryan is dead-set on coming for our Medicare and Social Security benefits while giving handouts to the rich and big corporations. This only deepens the hole House Republicans have already dug themselves, and Democrats and voters will not allow them to keep attacking our economic security and healthcare.
“The American people are outright rejecting Paul Ryan and his Republican agenda, and he has done permanent damage to the Republican brand. Quitting now won’t change that ahead of the 2018 midterms.”
