DCCC Statement on the Supreme Court Upholding Ohio’s Purge of Voting Rolls

On Monday, June 11, 2018, the Supreme Court ruled in Husted v. A. Philip Randolph Institute that states may purge voter rolls of registered voters. The Supreme Court’s decision gives Ohio Secretary of State John Husted the green light to purge thousands of Ohioans from the voters rolls and is another troubling move nationally towards making it harder to vote and lowering participation in our Democracy.

DCCC Director of African American Media and Deputy National Press Secretary, Kamau Marshall, issued the following statement:

“This decision will hurt people with disabilities, minorities, low-income individuals, and veterans. Public officials should never inhibit voting rights; instead, they should be fighting to protect and expand them. Voting is a right guaranteed by our Constitution, and any Party willing to suppress that right for political gain insults our democratic ideals and values. Our Vote is Our Voice in our democracy. It’s critical that we fight voter suppression — from voter purges to obstructive voter ID laws — in Ohio and every corner of the United States with the goal of expanding access and increasing voter participation.”
