DCCC Targets MI-07 and MI-10 as Democrats Plot Path to Majority

Today, the DCCC revealed its initial Districts In Play for the 2024 cycle and named MI-10, currently represented by John James, and the open MI-07 seat as offensive target districts that will help Democrats win back the House majority in 2024.

In 2022, John James won MI-10 by less than one percentage point, after losing the district in both his 2020 and 2018 failed senatorial bids.

• James compared abortion to “genocide” and has taken repeated votes against a woman’s right to choose. James has voted against consideration of the Women’s Health Protection Act which would codify the reproductive freedoms in Roe, and has voted to pass anti-choice legislation that could imprison doctors.

• James’ political career is dripped in election denialism. After losing to Sen. Gary Peters, James refused to acknowledge the results of the election. Even worse, James is an extreme MAGA Republican who accepted volunteer support for his campaign from members of the Proud Boys.

• James called the Affordable Care Act a “monstrosity” and could attempt to repeal the law.

• Earlier this year, James chose to put Michigan’s Great Lakes at risk when he voted against a bipartisan amendment that would block oil drilling and exploration in the Great Lakes. James – who has benefited from over $1.5 million from the oil and gas industry for campaign contributions – sided with Big Oil over the state of Michigan.

While MI-07 is an open seat, Elissa Slotkin carried the district by 5 points and Republican candidates were unable to raise the funds necessary to win. The DCCC is confident that with the right resources and a strong candidate, we will hold this seat.

The DCCC’s Districts In Play are competitive Republican-held or open districts across the nation that are critical battlegrounds as the DCCC works to unseat Republicans and win a Democratic House majority this cycle.

Additionally, this cycle will mark the first time ever that the DCCC has launched nominee fund pages, which allows grassroots donors to donate now to contribute to the eventual Democratic nominee in these Districts In Play.
