  • U.S. Rep. Kim Schrier met with state and federal forest officials, local leadership and first responders on Wednesday to discuss the Bolt Creek Fire recovery and restoration efforts, nearly one year after its devastation.

  • The fire burned for weeks starting in September 2022 along Highway 2, causing road closures that impacted businesses and concerns over the potential for landslides, flash floods and avalanches as rains came. Officials say the fire was human-caused.

  • “I think the big lesson learned here was that this can happen in western Washington and that should ring alarm bells for all of us,” Schrier said, recommending the Firewise program and other resources to create defensible space. “I would say just on a personal level with anybody watching right now, there are things you can do to protect yourself and your home.”

  • Officials lauded partnerships among firefighting agencies, state and federal partners, and Puget Sound Energy to ensure safety in the area.

  • Schrier is introducing the Reforestation, Nurseries and Genetic Resources Support Act of 2023 to assist with seeding and planting needs in areas like the Bolt Creek Burn Scar, according to Rep. Schrier’s office.
