Democratic Candidates Take Aim at Lowering Housing Costs

New reporting from POLITICO digs into how Democrats across the House battlefield are talking about lowering the cost of housing, which continues to be the number one expense for families.

Sam Forstag in MT-01 is sick of watching corporations buy up mobile home parks and put the squeeze on tenants: “There’s no way in hell that we should be allowing these private equity firms to buy mobile home lots in any number. We should have strict enforcement mechanisms, strict penalties to say that our basic needs are not some source of profit for your investment firm.”

Jake Johnson in MN-01 wants to crack down on corporations buying up multi-family housing: “It’s apartments, multifamily housing, where they come in, and they buy it up and then they jack up the price. It’s StubHub, except for housing.”

That message of lowering housing costs is resonating with voters across the battleground, and it will be top of mind on rent day and Election Day.

DCCC Spokesperson Liam Buckley:
“Too many Americans are struggling to afford to keep a roof over their heads, and voters want leaders who will fight for them, not the corporations profiting off their pain. Whether it’s paying rent, the mortgage, or achieving that dream of buying a first home, Democrats are fighting to make it possible for every person to afford to live with the dignity they deserve.”
