Last week, a federal judge blocked the lead provision of Trump’s illegal executive order that attempts to suppress voters, upend voter registration systems by handing over sensitive information to DOGE, and stop states from counting eligible mail ballots.
Democratic Committees and Leaders Jeffries and Schumer sued, and the court permanently blocked one of the key ways that Trump has attempted to seize control of federal election procedures, explaining that the “President has no constitutional power over election regulation that would support this unilateral exercise of authority.”
House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer, DCCC Chair Suzan DelBene, DNC Chair Ken Martin, DGA Chair Laura Kelly, and DSCC Chair Kirsten Gillibrand released the following statement:
“This court victory represents an important step in the fight to protect our democracy from Donald Trump’s unAmerican and illegal power grabs. While the president tries to silence voters because he’s afraid they’re rejecting his failed policies that are raising costs and ripping away health care, the Democratic Party stands for free and fair elections in which all American citizens can have their voices heard. We will continue to use every tool at our disposal to fight back against other parts of Trump’s illegal executive order, including his unconstitutional attempts to undermine the ability of states to run their own elections. Democrats are united and our work is just beginning.”
