Today, the Democratic Members of the Illinois Congressional Delegation released a statement expressing their support for the implementation of a new congressional map in the state to counter Republican gerrymandering efforts:
“Donald Trump and House Republicans have concluded that the only way to keep their weak majority is by stealing congressional seats in Texas, Missouri, North Carolina, Indiana, and elsewhere. We have been left with no other option and will not sit idly by as MAGA extremists attempt to rig the 2026 congressional elections. It falls to the Land of Lincoln to counter an out-of-control Trump Administration that is failing to lower costs, decimating the health care of the American people, and attempting to deploy armed troops to our state.
The General Assembly has incredibly important legislative and policy work to do this week to protect the people of Illinois from the extremism that the Trump administration has relentlessly unleashed on them this year. After careful consideration, we, the Members of the Illinois Delegation, also firmly support advancing a new congressional map that levels the playing field, safeguards free elections, and defends our state against Republican extremists while keeping voters of color and communities of interest together.
In the interest of minimizing disruption to the Illinois election calendar and providing voters certainty, we strongly encourage the legislature to seriously consider this new congressional map.”
