Democrats Net Key Victory Securing Mail-In Ballot Access in California

Republicans drop frivolous suit to block mail-in ballot access amid deadly pandemic

Today, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and California Democratic Party declared victory in two federal suits, one brought by the Republican National Committee and the other by Darrell Issa, that sought to prevent the State of California from mailing vote-by-mail ballots to every registered voter ahead of the November 3, 2020 General Election.

As the health impact of COVID-19 became clear earlier this year, Governor Gavin Newsome issued an executive order that would allow state election officials to send vote-by-mail ballots to California voters.

After months of attempting to block efforts to making voting safer and more accessible in the state, the passage of California AB 860 pushed Republicans to drop their frivolous suit that could have disenfranchised millions of voters during a pandemic that continues to threaten Californians’ health.

DCCC Chairwoman Cheri Bustos
“California voters can now rest assured that safe, secure mail-in voting will be an option this November without worrying about how to get access to a ballot during a global pandemic. This is a victory for securing our democracy that removes impediments to participation and ensures public health.”

California Democratic Party Chair Rusty Hicks
“I am proud to have partnered with the DCCC to ensure that every Californian will be able to cast their ballot safely during this pandemic. Republicans are right to have dropped their lawsuit, but frankly it’s shameful they filed it to begin with. Today is a good day for Democracy in California.”
