Last month: “Hurd disputes allegations from lawyers describing unsanitary conditions and said he’s seen no mistreatment”
Last night: Hurd votes against a House bill “requiring CBP to enact safety, hygiene standards”
On Wednesday, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill to strengthen safety and hygiene standards at migrant detention facilities (like the infamous one in Will Hurd’s district) and increase oversight and accountability.
That’s no surprise, considering Hurd – against all evidence – has denied mistreatment of kids at the Clint, Texas detention facility in his district.
After pledging his vote to Donald Trump next year and voting with the president 95 percent of the time, Hurd is refusing to take responsibility for the scandal unfolding in his district and on his watch.
Remember: it was in Hurd’s district that New York Times and El Paso Times journalists uncovered shocking new details on the horrific conditions migrant children faced inside the Clint detention facility – conditions Hurd himself denied after touring the facility and did nothing about.
But prior to the report, Hurd denied the horrific conditions, disputing reports of unsanitary facilities and saying he’s seen no mistreatment.
“Hurd disputes allegations made from lawyers describing unsanitary conditions and said he’s seen no mistreatment. ‘My understanding is that the lawyers did not see the facilities the way the media was able to see it,’ Hurd said.”
“As hundreds of children were packed into diseased cages and forced to survive in horrific and unsanitary conditions in Will Hurd’s backyard, Hurd did nothing and looked the other way,” DCCC Spokesperson Avery Jaffe said. “After denying that kids were being mistreated in his district, Hurd’s vote against stronger safety and hygiene standards is yet another reminder that he’s supporting Donald Trump’s re-election and votes to enable his agenda 95 percent of the time.”
