Derek Tran Fighting Trump’s Tariff Tax, Standing Up for Working Families

In a recent op-ed, Army Veteran, workers’ rights advocate, and Congressman Derek Tran made clear whose side he’s on: California families. While Donald Trump and Republicans jack up the cost of everyday essentials and saddle working families with a hidden tax through reckless tariffs, Tran is working to lower costs and build an economy where families can thrive, not just get by.

Since entering Congress, Tran has made lowering costs his top priority. As co-founder of the Lowering Costs Caucus and a leader in the Congressional Dads Caucus and the New Dem Economic Growth & Cost of Living Working Group, Tran has led efforts to hold Republicans accountable for higher costs and championed commonsense legislation to exempt clothing, baby formula, and other household staples from harmful tariffs.

Orange County Register: Derek Tran: Americans deserve to know the true toll of tariffs

  • Prices of basic necessities are jumping from one week to the next. That’s not feasible for working families. As a father of three young kids, I know how important it is for my family to plan what we’re going to spend on things like groceries, school supplies, and clothes.
  • President Trump’s reckless trade wars are making life more difficult…Tariffs can be an important tool to level the economic playing field and even bolster national security, but tariffs imposed without clear objectives impose a tax on working families and make our economy more uncertain.
  • That’s why I co-founded the Lowering Cost Caucus…We want tofocus on building an economy that not only helps working families get by, but get ahead.
  • One of our first actions was to introduce the Toll of Tariffs Act, to bring transparency and accountability to President Trump’s tariff regime…American families deserve real answers about the prices they’re seeing, not political spin.
  • I’ve also taken action to bring even more relief to parents incurring major expenses when they’re starting or growing their family…I introduced the Baby Food Tax Relief Act, which would exempt essential items like formula, bottles, and highchairs from Trump’s tariffs.
  • These are basic necessities, not luxury goods, and they shouldn’t be priced out of reach for new parents.
  • When my parents came to the United States as refugees, this country welcomed them and helped me rise from poverty to the halls of power.
  • My family’s story exemplifies the American Dream, but that dream can feel out of reach for folks across our country who struggle to keep up with rising costs – sometimes even while working multiple jobs.
  • Lowering prices isn’t just about helping families stretch their hard-earned money a little further – it’s about freedom and security.
  • I’m going to keep fighting to keep your hard-earned money in your pocket. I’m committed to working across the aisle to ensure California families don’t just get by, but get ahead.
