Derrick Van Orden & Bryan Steil Are Failing Wisconsinites

Wisconsinites are blasting Derrick Van Orden and Bryan Steil for embracing the extremists in their party, undermining democracy, and failing to get anything done for families.

With a government shutdown looming and the Farm Bill expiring 27 days ago, Van Orden and Steil are putting Wisconsinites on the back burner while they play political games.

Keep reading to see what Wisconsinites are saying this week about Bryan Steil and Derrick Van Orden:

Up North News: Commentary: Wisconsin Republicans have wasted critical days supporting MAGA election deniers instead of working

  • Without a Speaker, the House is unable to meaningfully advance action on the issues that matter to Wisconsin families. Wisconsin Republicans’ choice to waste critical time throwing support to Jordan, instead of working with Democrats on a bipartisan solution, was a clear signifier that they are willing to put their own partisan interests ahead of what’s best for Wisconsin.
  • It is extremely disappointing that fellow Republican Reps. Derrick Van Orden, Mike Gallagher, Bryan Steil, and Glenn Grothman have also been unwilling to work together and reach a compromise to allow our House to function as it should: for the people.
  • Congress now has less than a month to work together and reach an agreement to avoid a government shutdown that would severely harm constituents by cutting programs that help millions of hardworking Wisconsinites provide for their families.
  • By voting against the agreement last month and now refusing to work across the aisle to elect a House Speaker, Wisconsin Republicans are happily endorsing:
    • 900 Wisconsin service members losing their pay;
    • 90,000+ Wisconsinites put at risk of losing critical nutrition assistance;
    • 500+ TSA officers and 70+ air traffic controllers in Wisconsin being forced to work without pay;
    • $3,000,000+ in losses for Wisconsin’s small businesses;
    • Several delays for disaster recovery projects across Wisconsin; and more.

Beloit Daily News: Opinion: Become a leader, crush the crazies

  • The time for optimism expired some three weeks ago, when a thin and extreme slice of the Republican conference was enabled to oust then-Speaker Kevin McCarthy.
  • Then it became clear the Republican majority had no Plan B. What has followed is an embarrassing lack of leadership at a time when the world needs America to stand tall. America has been held hostage by a relative handful of extreme grandstanders who would rather burn down the House than actually govern.
  • So to our representative, Bryan Steil, and other responsible Republicans: What will you do now to stamp out this tyranny of the minority?
  • These same agents of chaos will never embrace reason. Voters gave Republicans the majority to govern and get things done. It’s obvious, to accomplish that, House Republicans must put a foot on the throat of those in their party who just want to make a mess and sow division.
  • When Bryan Steil is back home, talking to the folks, he sounds like a reasonable guy who should be part of that coalition. But is he the same guy in Washington?
  • Representative Steil, find like-minded colleagues and crush the radicals in your own conference. Then be part of a coalition for responsible governance, working across the aisle if that’s what it takes to get things done. Stop embarrassing America.

Up North News: Do January 6 ‘spectators’ deserve any benefit of the doubt? We doubt it.

  • Photographic evidence shows Van Orden was in a restricted area beyond police boundaries on the Capitol grounds, but the protester-turned-congressman has consistently said he did nothing wrong, left the scene before things turned violent, and immediately denounced those who took part in it.
  • Van Orden may not have entered the Capitol that day, but that does not remove responsibility for the role he played…Trump is responsible for summoning the mob and whipping it into a frenzy, but everyone who answered his call—Van Orden included—played a role in determining the size and scope of an activity designed to overturn a presidential election.
  • In keeping with his pugnacious reputation, Van Orden will most likely use the story to attack critics as being “Mostly False.” He shouldn’t. No one who traveled to Washington, DC at Trump’s invitation—based on what had repeatedly been proven to be lies about the election—can claim to be a mere spectator to mayhem that followed.
  • Trump and his co-defendants are learning one-by-one that justice is coming. For the members of Congress who were aligned with Trump in some way, such as undermining election integrity, voting to overturn results, or encouraging the mob, we believe justice is also coming for them—at the ballot box.
