Despite Promises Not to, John Duarte Votes to Restrict Abortion Freedoms

John Duarte votes against protecting reproductive freedom

As women across the country endure the unimaginable, brutal consequences of Republican’s war on women, John Duarte and House Republicans are doubling down on an anti-choice agenda in the early days of serving in the majority.

On the campaign trail, Duarte claimed he would “vote against any effort to nationalize abortion law” – but today, he did just that. Today John Duarte voted to pass anti-choice legislation that could imprison doctors and is “chock-full of misinformation and creates more barriers to care.

In his tough election, Duarte mislead voters when he claimed he doesn’t think “any level of government — local, state or federal — should interfere with decisions a woman makes.” But now he will face the consequences when voters see what he truly believes. IF THIS WERE ACTUALLY DUARTE’S BELIEF, he would have voted against the anti-abortion legislation and would not have blocked consideration of the Women’s Health Protection Act which would codify the reproductive freedoms Roe v. Wade guaranteed before the Supreme Court ripped them away. Instead, Duarte’ is ceding power to states that are passing extreme bans and putting bounties on women’s heads.

Clearly, John Duarte and House Republicans did not learn anything when voters sent a clear and resounding message that they support reproductive freedom – dealing the Republican party an embarrassing midterm performance.

DCCC spokesperson Tommy Garcia:
“When it was politically expedient, John Duarte downplayed House Republicans’ commitment to banning abortion nationwide and suggested he would be reasonable in protecting women’s freedoms. Now that John Duarte is in Congress and has made it through a tough election, he is showing voters his true cards: Duarte is willing to go along with Republicans’ war on women.”
