After blocking equal pay for equal work for Michigan women and voting against raising the minimum wage, Congressman Dan Benishek is starting his dishonest campaign to distract voters for his refusal to deliver for the middle class. He kicked off his tour of dishonesty by trying to hide from his vote for a reckless budget that raises taxes on the middle class.
Benishek claimed to a local radio station that “I’ve never voted to raise taxes on the middle class” despite voting consistently for a budget that gives special interests and millionaires tax breaks while shifting the burden to the middle class.
“Congressman Benishek isn’t shooting straight with the voters about his votes for budgets that raise taxes on the middle class in order to give the ultra-wealthy a bigger tax cut,” said Brandon Lorenz of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. “No matter what Congressman Benishek says now, his voting record in Washington is clear, and he’s voted over and over again to raise taxes on the middle class in order to cut taxes for the wealthy.”
BACKGROUND:
Congressman Benishek Voted for the Extreme Republican Budget. In 2013, Benishek voted for the extreme Republican budget for fiscal year 2014 that would end the Medicare guarantee – by converting the program into voucher-based system – and pay for tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans on the backs of working families. The bill passed, 221-207. [HCR 25, Vote #88, 3/21/13]
- Middle Class Families Would Pay On Average $3,000 More in Taxes, Under Ryan Budget. An analysis of the Ryan budget by the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities concluded that “to fully finance the tax cuts for people with incomes over $200,000, filers with children and incomes under $200,000 would see their taxes go up by more than $3,000 on average, even with the ambitious reductions in tax expenditures for high-income households that TPC examined.” [Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, 3/17/13]
