The Republican primary field in Virginia’s 2nd Congressional district is in a race to the far right to prove their extremist credentials. Now, after former President Trump released a disturbing statement saying, “The insurrection took place on November 3, Election Day. January 6 was the Protest!” — he’s laid a new marker for them. Kiggans must say whether she agrees with Trump and Bell’s extreme lie about his loss of the 2020 election.
And don’t expect either Kiggans or Bell to hold Trump accountable. Instead they’ve been lining up to parrot his extremist lies which have threatened our democracy.
Bell has repeatedly made the claim that Election Day was a “coup,” that January 6 was “not an insurrection,” and that the insurrectionists were “patriots” who “did nothing wrong.” He has also made a violent and reprehensible call to “audit all 50 states” and arrest, try, convict, and execute Americans predicated on the Big Lie that the election was stolen. Meanwhile, Kiggans has shamefully refused to say that Biden won the 2020 election and has instead tried to “deflect the question” and said it was “right to question the electoral process.”
“Just like their Washington party leaders, Kiggans and Bell have spent months trying to gaslight Coastal Virginians about the insurrection, a deadly domestic terrorist attack on our democracy inspired by the election lies they’ve helped spread,” said DCCC Spokesperson Elena Kuhn. “Now, Jen Kiggans must make clear where she stands: does she agree with Trump and Bell that Election Day was an insurrection?”
