“DUMBEST THING IN THE WORLD”: Scott Taylor Says He Won’t Deny Coverage For Pre-Existing Conditions After Voting To Deny Coverage For Pre-Existing Conditions

He can’t be serious.

During a recent event, Scott Taylor, who was rejected by Virginians in 2018 in large part because of his votes to dismantle health care after breaking his promise to protect coverage for people with pre-existing conditions, said he won’t vote against pre-existing conditions. But the lie detector test determined, that was a lie.

TAYLOR’S CLAIM: “Like most people in here right now, my family has folks that have preexisting conditions. I’m not gonna deny coverage for someone who has pre-existing conditions, that’d be voting against my own family, it’s the dumbest thing in the world.”

THE FACTS:

  • Taylor votedfor the ACA repeal bill that gutted protections for people with pre-existing conditions. That bill would have left 45,000 of his own constituents without health care and undermined protections for the over 300,000 residents of VA-02 with preexisting conditions– half of the nonelderly population of the district. Taylor even claimed he was elected specifically to gut the Affordable Care Act.
  • Additionally, Taylor wants to raise the retirement age and voted against lowering out-of-pocket drug costs for seniors and voted to gut Medicare, on which 21,069 residents in Virginia’s 2nd district rely. If Taylor had his way and the Republican repeal bill had become law, Virginia would not have been able to expand Medicaid to cover an additional 400,000. Likewise, an additional 30,000 Virginians would not have been able to enroll in Medicaid during the coronavirus pandemic. Since Virginia expanded Medicaid, tens of thousands of residents have been treated for underlying conditions of the virus, including high blood pressure, asthma and diabetes.

“Scott Taylor’s right,” said DCCC Spokesperson Christine Bennett. “Voting against coverage for people with pre-existing conditions is the dumbest thing in the world and yet, Scott Taylor did it anyway.”
