After hiding from voters for months and lying about their extreme plans, House Republicans did it. They cut Medicaid.
Specifically, vulnerable House Republicans on the Energy and Commerce Committee fell in line behind their party leaders to enact the largest cut to Medicaid in history that would lead to millions of Americans losing health care, threaten the closure of hospitals across the country, and also levy a hidden tax on Medicaid enrollees. And they did it all to pay for their tax scam to give permanent tax breaks to the ultra-wealthy, leaving the rest of us with the bill.
During committee debate, the vulnerable Republicans voted down amendments to protect Medicaid and lower prescription drug prices.
They did all this despite the fact that recent polling shows more than three quarters of Americans – including a majority of Republicans – oppose cutting Medicaid.
DCCC Spokesperson Viet Shelton:
“Vulnerable House Republicans today decided that making everyday Americans pay for permanent tax breaks for the ultra-wealthy was more important to them than protecting health care for the people in their districts. This vote will haunt them in 2026.”
