Extreme IA-03 Republican Primary Field Would End Access to Legal Abortion In “All Circumstances and Without Exceptions”

Reminder: Des Moines Register polling shows nearly 60% of Iowans say abortion should be legal in most or all cases

Last night, the IA-03 Republican primary field made crystal clear that they’re far out of step with Iowans, as Zach Nunn, Nicole Hasso, and Gary Leffler all staked out the extreme position that “abortions should be illegal in all circumstances and without exceptions.”

If Nunn, Hasso, and Leffler had their way, they would ban abortions even in cases of rape, incest, and when the mother’s life is at risk. Their dangerous and extreme position is wildly out of step with IA-03 voters, where recent polling shows that nearly 60% of Iowans support abortion being legal in most or all cases.

The IA-03 field’s extreme stance on reproductive freedom is just the latest sign that the GOP primary will only get messier as the candidates push each other further and further to the fringes. Just last week every candidate in the race shamefully defended the rioters who violently attacked police officers and our democracy in the U.S. Capitol on January 6th.

Des Moines Register: Iowa 3rd District GOP candidates say all abortions should be illegal as Supreme Court weighs Roe v. Wade
May 3, 2022

  • Each of the Republicans running in Iowa’s 3rd Congressional District affirmed during a debate Tuesday that they believe abortions should be illegal in all circumstances and without exceptions.

  • Their comments came as a leaked draft of a pending U.S. Supreme Court opinion showed a majority of justices appear ready to overrule Roe v. Wade, which established a constitutional right to abortion, and Planned Parenthood v. Casey, another landmark abortion decision. The court confirmed the authenticity of the draft, which was first reported by Politico, but noted it is not final.

  • Businesswoman Nicole Hasso of Johnston, activist and retired farmer Gary Leffler of West Des Moines and state Sen. Zach Nunn of Bondurant are seeking the Republican nomination for the House seat in the coming June 7 primary. It’s currently held by Democrat Cindy Axne, who is seeking reelection.

  • Each of the Republicans raised a hand when WHO-TV journalist and debate moderator Dave Price asked whether they believe abortion should be illegal in every circumstance and without exception.
