Extreme MAGA Republicans Admit to Holding U.S. Economy “Hostage,” Deride Negotiations to Avert Global Recession

Far-right extremist Matt Gaetz admits House Republicans prefer default over a deal – and calls for an end to negotiations

With just days left to prevent a catastrophic default, in an interview with Semafor, Freedom Caucus member Matt Gaetz publicly admitted House Republicans oppose a bipartisan deal and prefer a default.

GAETZ: “I think my conservative colleagues … don’t feel like we should negotiate with our hostage.”

Last month, vulnerable House Republicans voted to pass the “Default on America Act” – which, according to Gaetz, was a rubber-stamp for the Freedom Caucus agenda: “The leadership just picked up the House Freedom Caucus plan and helped us convert it into the legislative text.”

The “Default on America Act” would enact dangerous cuts  that would hurt everyday families, veterans, and children. The House Freedom Caucus says the “Default on America Act” is their red-line – and they are no longer willing to negotiate.

DCCC spokesperson Viet Shelton:
“Matt Gaetz said the quiet part out loud: MAGA Republicans don’t want to negotiate, they just want to hold our economy hostage. They actually prefer a job killing-recession over any bipartisan deal. Are vulnerable House Republicans finally willing to admit publicly with Gaetz that they are holding our economy hostage unless their extreme demands are met?”

REMINDER: Last week, the DCCC launched a new microsite – GOPVotedToDefault.com – highlighting the extreme and painful spending cuts vulnerable House Republicans voted for as part of their ‘Default on America Act.
