Today, the Supreme Court hears oral arguments in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, a challenge to a Mississippi law that bans abortion at 15 weeks of pregnancy — which could unravel the constitutional right to abortion guaranteed by Roe v. Wade. Should this extreme law be upheld, 26 states could move to ban the right to abortion, and individuals across the country could have 50 years of precedent and constitutionally-secured rights stripped away from them.
This Mississippi law is just one of the latest attacks on a woman’s right to make her own decision about her body. Republican extremism at every level of government is to blame for the continued threat to women’s freedoms and health care.
House Republicans are no exception – their record proves it. In July, 184 House Republicans signed an amicus brief urging the Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade, despite the fact 77% of the American people support keeping Roe in place. And when House Democrats sought to protect abortion and reproductive health care by voting on the Women’s Health Protection Act, every single Republican voted “NO” to women’s freedoms.
“As the Supreme Court hears oral arguments on backward anti-choice laws like the one in Mississippi, voters across the nation are reminded that House Republicans are all too happy to further the radical crusade to outlaw all abortion in the United States,” said DCCC Spokesperson Nebeyatt Betre. “Make no mistake – trying to control women’s decisions and taking away their constitutional right to make their own health care decisions is a top priority in Republicans’ dangerous agenda.”
