Extremist House Republicans Vote to Shut Down the Government, Gravely Risking Americans’ Health and Paychecks

House Republicans would rather shut down the government than beat the pandemic

Last night, nearly every single House Republican voted to shut down the government, willfully risking crucial government services like sending out food stamps, delivering tax refunds, and processing new social security applications just as families are preparing for the holidays. Their vote would have also furloughed the majority of employees at the CDC and held the paychecks of hundreds of thousands of federal workers hostage as part of the GOP’s dangerous and continued efforts to prolong the pandemic.

Since the start of the pandemic, House Republicans have continuously voted “NO” on legislation that would protect both the health and the economic progress of the American people.

Their latest extremist vote — done for the sole purpose of political gamesmanship instead of concern for American families and workers — shows that Republicans’ consistent disregard for the wellbeing of our country has made them too extreme for the American people.

“House Republicans’ reckless vote yesterday proves they care more about dangerous partisan politics than the millions of Americans who rely on these critical government services,” said DCCC Spokesperson Nebeyatt Betre. “Their complete lack of leadership or care to avoid a painful government shutdown is just the latest evidence of their total inability to govern for the American people.”
