| Less than 50 days ahead of the midterms, Gabe Evans and his Republican allies are making a last ditch effort to save his doomed campaign by lying to Colorado voters.
A new fact check exposes how a Republican attack ad on Manny “does not pass the smell test,” specifically highlighting how Manny “didn’t directly vote for a pay raise and that he will not benefit from it.”
The fact check also revealed “it is accurate to say” Evans’ vote for the Big, Ugly Bill raised Coloradans’ health care costs.
DCCC Spokesperson Lindsay Reilly:
“Gabe Evans can’t defend his disastrous, cost-hiking record in Washington. Rather than working to lower costs, Evans is focused on trying to save his doomed campaign by desperately lying to voters. Colorado families will strongly reject Evans at the ballot box and send Manny Rutinel to Congress.”

- In multiple ads attacking Rutinel, there are claims about him voting for his own pay raise that fail to include important context. Particularly, the part where he didn’t directly vote for a pay raise and that he will not benefit from it.
- This claim misleads about what Rutinel voted on. In 2024, he voted yes on a bill that created an independent commission to determine pay raises for future lawmakers.
- Rutinel did not pick the dollar amount, and he will not benefit because he will not be a state lawmaker when the raise takes effect next year.
- Another claim against Rutinel defies logic.
- AD CLAIM: “Manny voted to raise his own pay while supporting a nearly $4 trillion tax increase on working families.”
- In May, Colorado Public Radio interviewed Rutinel, and Rutinel called that budget bill “the biggest transfer of wealth from working people to the billionaire class.”
- He told CPR he supports no tax on tips and overtime, which were both part of that bill. He also supports “whatever programs are helping in the 8th Congressional District.”
- But then Rutinel said, “The programs that are hurting them, including the gutting of Medicaid, the gutting of the Affordable Care Act, the gutting of food assistance. We need to bring those programs back.”
- Now on to a couple of claims made about Evans.
- AD CLAIM: “When I got the notice about my premiums going up, it stopped me in my tracks. For some, they’re doubling, all because Gabe Evans cast a deciding vote for Trump’s billionaire tax cut while slashing healthcare for Coloradans.”
- It is accurate to say a vote for H.R. 1 did not continue the 2021 Affordable Care Act tax credits that were expiring.
- The tax credits that expired lowered premiums for those who bought health insurance through the marketplace and did not get health insurance from an employer.
- Without the credit, the premiums shot up this year, and for some it was 100% or more.
