Fact Check: Trump Lied About His Attacks On Drug Prices And Pre-Existing Conditions

Axios: only one of the parties has a track record of defending those protections, and it’s not the GOP.

President Trump lied about he and Washington Republicans’ record on attacking Americans’ health care last night. And he’s getting called out for it.

To be fair, lying is his best option given that 54 percent of Americans disapprove of his record on health care. And the rising costs of health care and prescription drugs are the number one issue for voters heading into November.

He’s going to have to do a lot more lying to make up for the DCCC’s recent seven-figure national ad buy holding McConnell and Washington Republicans accountable for blocking bipartisan House-passed legislation to let Medicare negotiate to bring down the cost of drugs.

Just a few of the fact checks calling out Trump’s lies about health care

Associated Press: People with preexisting medical problems have health insurance protections because of President Barack Obama’s health care law, which Trump is trying to dismantle.

Axios: Pre-existing conditions protections are popular, and both parties are trying to claim credit for them. But only one of the parties has a track record of defending those protections, and it’s not the GOP.

Kaiser Health News:

Washington Post: Trump has scant results to show on lowering drug prices.

NBC News:

FactCheck.Org: The president said he made an “iron-clad” promise to “always protect patients with preexisting conditions,” but that ignores the fact he has supported Republican health plans that would reduce the current protections under the Affordable Care Act.

Washington Post: In an ongoing court case, the Trump administration is supporting a total repeal of the Affordable Care Act — including its guarantee that patients can’t be denied coverage for preexisting conditions. Republicans in Congress tried for years to repeal the whole law. Trump has not presented a plan to cover the gaps in case the court challenge is successful. Moreover, he has promoted short-term plans (which he touted in his speech) that are not required to cover preexisting conditions.

Los Angeles Times: His administration has undertaken several efforts to undermine or repeal the Affordable Care Act, including its guarantee of insurance coverage for patients with preexisting medical conditions.

TIME: But health experts say the President has long supported efforts to repeal the Affordable Care Act and subsequently strip away consumer protections for patients with pre-existing conditions.

CNN: Trump’s administration is also allowing states to make major changes to their Obamacare markets, which could also leave low-income, older or sicker residents with few choices and higher costs.

Vox: The bad news for people with preexisting conditions is that this “ironclad pledge” is a lie. Trump and his administration have fought hard — in all three branches of government — to strip people with preexisting health conditions of the protections they enjoy under the Affordable Care Act.
