Either it’s 2018 all over again, or Iowans are experiencing some serious déjà vu. Today, rejected Congressman David Young released his first ad of the 2020 election, picking up right where he left off in his dishonest attempts to mislead voters on his health care record. While Rep. Cindy Axne has spent nearly two years in Congress voting to protect those with pre-existing conditions, Young’s voting record speaks for itself. In 2017, Young caved to pressure from his party bosses and voted to gut protections for over one million Iowans with pre-existing conditions – despite promising not to.
No matter how hard he tries, Young can’t change the facts:
- In 2015, David Young voted for a full repeal of protections for Iowans with pre-existing conditions, without a replacement.
- In March of 2017, David Young said he would oppose the GOP healthcare bill. A day later, the Congressional Leadership Fund announced they would no longer support David Young’s re-election bid, prompting Young to turn his back on Iowans by voting for the American Health Care Act, which would have gutted coverage for essential health benefits and protections for people with pre-existing conditions. It also would have created an age tax on seniors and included an amendment that allowed health insurance companies to charge people with pre-existing conditions more.
- David Young also voted in favor of the GOP tax scam, which besides just taking money from the middle class, raised premiums by 10 percent and ripped health insurance away from 13 million people.
- On his way to losing his seat over his AHCA vote, Young and 27 other Republicans in vulnerable districts tried to put forth a resolution expressing concern about people with pre-existing conditions. Despite Young’s claims, all the resolution does is express an opinion; it does not take any actionable steps to protect people with pre-existing conditions.
- As a member of Congress, Rep. Cindy Axne has made health care and protecting those with pre-existing conditions a key focus of her work. She has voted repeatedly to shore up the Affordable Care Act and its protections for Iowans with pre-existing conditions, introduced legislation to end surprise medical billing, and is working to lower the skyrocketing cost of prescription drugs.
“After Iowans held him accountable for voting to take health insurance away from people with pre-existing conditions, rejected Congressman David Young’s latest ad is a desperate attempt to lie about his record in Washington of attacking Iowans health care. It’s not going to work. Iowans know that when it mattered, Young caved to pressure from his party bosses and voted to take away their health care, while Rep. Cindy Axne has always had their backs,” said DCCC Spokesperson Brooke Goren.
