Failed Congressional Candidate and Conservative Hardliner Mark Assini Is Back

Assini, who once compared teaching science in classroom to Nazi indoctrination, is back on the campaign trail for a third time

Failed congressional candidate and conservative hardliner Mark Assini is announcing his third run for Congress later today.

As Rochester and Western New York voters already know, Assini’s Tea Party record is widely out of step with the district. Assini staunchly opposes a woman’s right to choose, and even referred to contraceptives as “abortion pills.” Assini also supported a constitutional ban against marriage equality in the past and opposed raising the minimum wage to $7.15.

Assini even garnered embarrassing headlines last year for comparing science in the classroom to Nazi indoctrination.

“Mark Assini, who once compared teaching science in the classroom to Nazi indoctrination and referred to contraceptives as abortion pills, is cut from the same cloth of extreme Tea Party hardliners that Rochester and Western New York voters have repeatedly rejected in the past,” said Bryan Lesswing at the DCCC. “Whether it’s his staunch opposition to a woman’s right to choose or his refusal to give hardworking families a well-deserved raise, voters only need a quick reminder that Mark Assini is too extreme for Rochester and Western New York.”

“Meanwhile, Rochester and Western New York voters know Louise Slaughter to be a relentless leader in Congress who takes on the tough fights every day to bring good paying jobs and economic development to the region,” added Lesswing.

Background

Why Congresswoman Slaughter is Strong in New York’s 25th Congressional District

  • In the last presidential cycle in 2012, Congresswoman Slaughter defeated challenger Maggie Brooks 57.4%-42.6%; and President Obama carried the district with 59.9% of the vote
  • Democrats hold a voter registration advantage over Republicans district wide.
  • Even in the challenging electoral climates of 2010 and 2014, Congresswoman Slaughter won a majority of the vote in NY-25 (50.2% and 50.7% support respectively).

Assini Supported A Constitutional Ban On Same-Sex Marriage. When asked if he would vote for a U.S. constitutional ban on gay marriage, Assini answered: “Yes. The integrity of our family must be preserved. The family is the foundation of our society, and marriage is between one man and one woman.” [Star Gazette, 9/08/04]

Assini Opposed A Woman’s Right To Choose. Assini: “I believe life to be sacred. I do not believe in abortion, period.” [Star Gazette, 8/26/04]
