“Failed Leadership,” “Misplaced Priorities,” “Immoral”: Constituents Torch Mike Lawler In Local Hudson Valley Press

NY-17 residents called out Lawler for prioritizing “partisan politics over the real concerns of New Yorkers” and voting “with radical MAGA Republicans against the public good”

Mike Lawler is getting scorched by his own constituents in the local paper—and for good reason.

Following the vulnerable Republican’s disturbing pattern of egregious votes to slash Medicaidgut food assistancerestrict reproductive freedomsdisassemble lifesaving health programscut public broadcasting funding, and rubberstamp the MAGA agenda at every turn, Hudson Valley voters are turning to their local newspapers to call Lawler out on his “failed leadership,” “misplaced priorities,” and lack of a “moral compass.”

DCCC Spokesperson Riya Vashi:
“From slashing Medicaid and defunding critical health programs to being a rubber stamp for Donald Trump’s extreme MAGA agenda, Mike Lawler’s record is one big slap in the face to working families in the Hudson Valley. Maybe Mike could finally find that long-lost moral compass if he stopped chasing Trump’s approval at every turn.”

Yonkers Times: Mike Lawler Has Failed Us

  • During the 118th Congress and throughout the 119th session, it has been clear that Representative Mike Lawler has used his position not to serve the needs of the Lower Hudson Valley, but to advance the extreme MAGA Project 2025 agenda at the expense of his own constituents.
  • Time and again, Lawler has prioritized partisan politics over the real concerns of New Yorkers—rising costs, affordable health care, and common sense immigration reform.
  • Lawler’s voting record is out of step with our community’s values. He has voted to slash Medicaid and food assistance for millions of low-income Americans, to restrict reproductive freedom and voting rights, and to cut funding for education and programs that help working families.
  • Instead of focusing on lowering costs or improving health care, Lawler has pushed legislation that would raise health care costs for over 100 million Americans with pre-existing conditions, and roll back protections for women, workers and children.
  • On immigration, Lawler campaigned on securing the border, but he has failed to deliver solutions. Instead, he has supported divisive, conspiracy-driven bills that do nothing to fix our broken system, while voting against bipartisan proposals that could actually help make a difference. And now, to add to his divisive policies, he supports military intervention at home.
  • He has also dismissed the rule of law and defended his party’s MAGA figurehead, even after felony convictions, despite previously claiming he would not support Trump if convicted.
  • Lawler follows Trump’s lead by using, and continuing to use, the Jewish community as a prop. He, like Trump, states his unwavering support for Israel and his vows against antisemitism without speaking up against domestic white nationalists like Steve Bannon and Elon Musk.
  • We deserve much better than Mike (Go Along to Get Along) Lawler’s record of failed leadership and misplaced priorities.

River Journal: Where Is Mike Lawler’s Moral Compass?

  • At a recent town hall, Representative Mike Lawler recalled that his dying father urged him to always follow his moral compass. I was heartened when Lawler added, “It’s something that guides me as I serve in public office.”
  • Yet, in practice, Lawler routinely disappoints me. While claiming to be a moderate, he votes to take money from programs that help vulnerable people to pay for tax breaks for the rich.
  • Here is a telling example. At his last two town halls, Lawler patted himself on the back for defending PEPFAR, a program that provides life-saving drugs to people with HIV. “PEPFAR,” he said in June, “has been one of the most successful foreign assistance programs in the history of the world. It has saved over 25 million lives over the last 20 years.”
  • How did he follow through on his defense of this critical, life-saving program? Last week, he voted for the House’s “rescissions” package that would pull back $9.4 billion in previously authorized funds for Public Broadcasting, National Public Radio, and foreign aid, including—you guessed it—PEPFAR.
  • Wise voters will monitor what Mike Lawler does, not merely what he says. He claims to be a moderate, but he routinely votes with radical MAGA Republicans against the public good. In my book, that’s immoral.
