FIVE DAYS LATER: Congressman Kelly Still Hasn’t Explained Why He Sells Cars with “Critical Safety Issues” to His Constituents

Kelly blasted for “tremendously dangerous and irresponsible” sale of cars with “critical safety issues”

Kelly previously advocated in Congress for car dealers to be allowed to rent and loan cars with uncorrected recalls

Congressman Mike Kelly still hasn’t explained why his car dealerships sell cars with “critical safety issues” five days after WTAE’s initial report on this “dangerous and irresponsible” business practice. When contacted by WTAE for comment, Congressman Kelly refused to answer, and instead punted the question.

Congressman Kelly previously advocated in Congress to allow fellow auto dealers to rent and sell cars with open safety recalls, despite acknowledging that customers driving defective and unsafe cars “could happen.” To thank Congressman Kelly for his advocacy, auto dealers have showered Kelly with $328,000 in campaign contributions.

“Congressman Kelly has been shamefully pocketing money off the sale of unsafe cars – and his advocacy in Congress for allowing this dangerous and deceptive practice nationwide has helped net him hundreds of thousands of dollars in campaign cash,” said DCCC spokesperson Mike Gwin. “Pennsylvanians deserve to know why Congressman Kelly thought it was acceptable to sell dangerous cars to them and then duck responsibility when he’s confronted about it.”
