On this day in 1935 the Social Security Act was signed into law to provide economic security for workers when they retired. Social Security has provided benefits to millions of American retirees, workers with disabilities, children, and their families. In the 7th Congressional District, more than 150,000 Virginians are able to enjoy retirement with dignity. The program, which turns 85 this year, remains incredibly popular to this day.
But not everyone is a fan.
In a 2018 Senatorial debate, then candidate Nick Freitas said Social Security “started to work like a Ponzi Scheme.” In that same debate, Freitas said that any politician who promised not to threaten or “touch Social Security” was “lying” and “not worthy of your trust.”
As millions of Americans face the financial threats of a global pandemic and an economic crisis, Virginians deserve to know the answer to this question: does Nick Freitas still believe Social Security is a Ponzi Scheme?
DCCC Spokesperson Christine Bennett released the following statement:
“We’re in the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression. Voters should know where Freitas stands on protecting Social Security, especially as Seventh District seniors are already reeling from this health and economic crisis. Will Freitas pledge to protect Social Security, which, by his own account, would make him an untrustworthy liar, or will he admit that he and his party will gut these crucial lifelines that millions of Americans rely on while continuing to not prioritize those most hurt by the crisis?”
