Last month, Representative John Katko made a big show over opposing the GOP budget because of its destruction of the state and local tax (SALT) deduction–the most popular deduction taken by New York taxpayers–saying “we gotta make sure the middle class doesn’t get screwed.”
How times have changed.
Yesterday, Katko told his constituents on an unadvertised telephone town hall that he was “leaning towards” voting for the GOP Tax Scam, which will do exactly what he initially warned against: hike taxes on middle-class families and destroy the SALT deduction, all so Republicans can slash taxes on big corporations and the rich.
The middle-class tax increase prompted Katko’s fellow New York Republican Congressman Peter King to call it “the ultimate self-inflicted wound.”
“To quote Representative Katko, the middle class is about to ‘get screwed’ and he’s to blame,” said DCCC Spokesman Evan Lukaske. “Nearly every New York Republican opposes this harmful tax scam, which will hike taxes on middle-class New York families in order to slash taxes on big corporations and the rich. That Katko’s supports it shows his complete disregard for the people he represents.”
