Wednesday’s bombshell day of testimony forces Congressman John Katko to decide, once again, whether he will continue to stand in lockstep with his party, sweeping the truth under the rug, or put country over party and support an investigation into whether the President of the United States tried to bribe foreign officials into producing dirt on his political opponent.
Here is the New York Times’ reporting on close Trump ally, Gordon Sondland’s testimony that he “followed the president’s orders”:
“Secretary Perry, Ambassador Volker and I worked with Mr. Rudy Giuliani on Ukraine matters at the express direction of the president of the United States,” Mr. Sondland told the committee. “We did not want to work with Mr. Giuliani. Simply put, we were playing the hand we were dealt.” With no alternative, he said, “we followed the president’s orders.”
Mr. Sondland confirmed what has already been known, that there was a clear “quid pro quo” linking a coveted White House meeting for Ukraine’s president to the investigations Mr. Trump wanted. And he said he was concerned about “a potential quid pro quo” linking $391 million in security aid that Mr. Trump suspended to the investigations he desired.
Congressman Katko needs to answer a simple question: now that even President Trump’s close allies are testifying that they “followed the president’s orders” in their attempt to bribe the Ukrainian government, will he continue to sweep the president’s abuse of power under the rug and hide the truth from his constituents?
