Two former Upstate New York Republican Congressmen are among the group of 30 former GOP lawmakers to announce their opposition to Donald Trump’s divisive and dangerous campaign.
In a joint letter, former Republican Congressmen Sherwood Boehlert and Amo Houghton Jr. argued that Trump lacks the “intelligence” and temperament to serve as president, and call on the Republican party to reject his candidacy.
The list of Upstate Republicans rejecting Trump is growing. In August, Congressman Richard Hanna announced his opposition to Donald Trump and support for Hillary Clinton. He also added, “What is there about Donald Trump that makes you think he could be President of the United States?”
Meanwhile, Congressman John Katko continues to tacitly support Donald Trump. Earlier this year, Katko said that he would “back” Trump’s candidacy and even met with Trump over the summer in Washington. Katko still hasn’t disavowed Trump.
“As more Upstate Republicans stand up to announce their opposition to Donald Trump, Congressman Katko continues to cower and tacitly support Trump’s divisive and dangerous campaign,” said Bryan Lesswing at the DCCC. “Central New York voters won’t be fooled. By refusing to oppose Trump, Congressman John Katko is an enabler of Trump’s insult-driven campaign against women, minorities, POWs, veterans, people with disabilities – the list goes on.”
