Freshman Mike Lawler is Lost

Mike Lawler still doesn’t have a budget plan

As the U.S. economy inches closer to default – a situation economists warn will have catastrophic consequences – Mike Lawler insists “there’s nothing concrete yet” on a budget proposal.

“All of these ideas are obviously being worked through,” Lawler said in an interview with the New York Times when asked about cutting food stamps for New York families. “There’s nothing concrete yet.”

Lawler’s admission of defeat comes after Speaker McCarthy and the extreme MAGA Republicans in the House failed to meet President Biden’s request to publicly propose a budget resolution before lawmakers left Washington for a two-week district work period. For months, House Republicans have refused to pass a clean debt ceiling raise without negotiating a budget blueprint showing sharp cuts for the upcoming 2024 fiscal year.

REMINDER: Lawler is convinced that extreme MAGA Republicans in the House Freedom Caucus – who have released a budget proposal of their own that would risk eliminating thousands of jobs made possible by the Inflation Reduction Act, among other drastic cuts – understand the “severity” of a default.

DCCC spokesperson Tommy Garcia:
“Big Oil lobbyist Mike Lawler is clearly lost. Nearly 100 days in the halls of Congress, Lawler has proven he’s willing to cover for his extreme colleagues while refusing to offer productive solutions. Lawler must make clear to New Yorkers how he plans to stop catastrophic default.”
