Gabe Vasquez Continues Fight for New Mexico’s Public Lands

As co-founder of the Public Lands Caucus and co-chair of the Wildlife Refuge Caucus, Congressman Gabe Vasquez continues to lead the bipartisan charge to defend New Mexico’s public lands from partisan schemes.

At a recent visit to the Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge – public land that is critical for the local economy – Vasquez heard directly from staff and local partners about the budgetary and staffing challenges they’re facing, which are being made worse by GOP budget cuts and their forced government shutdown that held New Mexicans’ health care hostage.

Earlier this year, Vasquez prevented extreme House Republicans’ budget provision that would have gutted protections for more than 500,000 acres of federally protected land and fought back against a second GOP proposal threatening millions of acres across New Mexico and the West.

“Our public land agencies must be well-staffed and well-managed for the benefit of rural economies and all Americans. Once we lose these places and the integrity of their management, we can’t get them back. We must protect our public lands at all costs.” – Rep. Vasquez
