Garcia’s Gone Washington – Chapter 6 – New Study: Amidst A Deadly Pandemic, Congressman Garcia’s Agenda To Strip Health Care Would Cost Over 4 Million Californians

Study Comes As Opening Briefs Are Filed In Lawsuit To Eliminate The Affordable Care Act

As the federal government today files its opening briefs in a House Republican-backed lawsuit to overturn the Affordable Care Act, a new study shows that if successful, the suit would strip health coverage from 4,227,000 Californians – including those who’ve recently lost their jobs during the COVID-19 economic crisis.

Despite its dangerous consequences, Congressman Garcia has campaigned on repealing the Affordable Care Act.

Researchers at the Center For American Progress found that:

“ACA repeal would have disastrous consequences for the American people. In addition to the roughly 23 million people who would lose coverage, repeal would eliminate essential consumer protections, including those for people with preexisting conditions; requirements for insurers to spend premium dollars on patient care; and mandates that insurers cover prescription drugs, mental health care, and other essential health benefits…

Because the economic crisis stemming from the pandemic is driving millions of people onto coverage programs supported by the ACA, CAP estimates that approximately 3 million more people stand to lose coverage from the health care repeal lawsuit than the 20 million previously estimated.”

If Congressman Garcia and House Republicans succeed at overturning the ACA, insurance companies would be able to discriminate against patients battling COVID-19.

Statement From DCCC Spokesperson Andy Orellana:

“We’re battling the worst pandemic in more than a century, but Congressman Garcia and Trump’s Washington GOP are working to put public health at even greater risk. It’s disturbing that Congressman Garcia is backing an agenda of taking health coverage from over 4 million Californians and let insurance companies discriminate against California families battling COVID-19.”
