As the Delta variant ravages unvaccinated communities, jeopardizes our economic recovery, and lands more and more Georgians in the hospital every day, Republican politician Rich McCormick in GA-07 has downplayed the deadly pandemic and willfully spread misinformation. And as ICU beds fill to capacity in Georgia, he’s chosen to further discourage life-saving vaccinations by coming out against basic vaccine requirements for employees of large businesses.
Essential vaccinations for highly transmissible and deadly diseases, like smallpox and polio, have been required in the United States for decades. But Rich McCormick is continuing to abuse his credentials as a doctor to spread disinformation about the pandemic and rage against basic vaccine requirements.
In recent interviews, Rich McCormick downplayed the danger of the Delta variant as hospitalizations were on the rise in Georgia and falsely claimed that “the spike in cases has been overblown.” McCormick also discouraged vaccinations, claiming it “makes no sense” to “[vaccinate] people to protect other people who are unvaccinated” and said “who really cares” if children get vaccinated.
Bottom line: House Democrats are working non-stop to get this pandemic under control and get our economy back on track, while Republican politicians have used their platforms to spread disinformation, discourage vaccinations, ban basic public health measures like wearing masks, and prolong the pandemic that has claimed the lives of more than 650,000 Americans.
“Rich McCormick has routinely abused his platform as a practicing doctor to spread disinformation, downplay the danger of this pandemic, and rage against basic public health measures,” said DCCC spokesperson Monica Robinson. “As ICU beds fill to capacity in Georgia, he shows no sign of stopping. It’s morally bankrupt and utterly indefensible. No mincing words here: Rich McCormick’s dangerous rhetoric is prolonging this pandemic.”
