GM Just Announced Its Biggest Investment in Michigan in Over a Decade. So Why Did Tom Barrett Vote Against It?

If Barrett had his way, MI-07 would lose out on a “big win for Michigan” to create 4,000 new manufacturing jobs, retain 1,000 jobs

Today, Michigan is winning big as General Motors invests $7 billion to create 4,000 new jobs, including at a new battery factory in the Lansing area. Democrats and Republicans came together to make Michigan the “‘hub’ of electric vehicle development and manufacturing.” Even Republican State Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirkey praised the deal. So why did Sen. Tom Barrett try to block it from happening?

If Barrett got his way, these critical investments, which will secure at least 5,000 Michigan manufacturing jobs and are expected to create thousands more ancillary jobs, would’ve never happened. Barrett voted against bipartisan measures to attract new manufacturing plants and good-paying jobs to Mid-Michigan. What’s his explanation for trying to tank one of the biggest investments in the state in recent history?

“Michigan leaders from across the political spectrum came together to create good-paying manufacturing jobs in the Great Lakes State,” said DCCC spokesperson Elena Kuhn. “When Tom Barrett had a chance to join a bipartisan effort to bring new GM facilities and 4,000 new jobs to Michigan, he didn’t just shirk his responsibilities — he actually voted to block the deal that would bring $2.6 billion in investment to the Greater Lansing area. Tom Barrett has made clear he cares more about hyper-partisan posturing than working together to create new jobs in Michigan.”
