GOP Plan to Lower Costs? Gut Agency Responsible for Putting Money Back in People’s Pockets

CNN: “‘This means that nobody is actually overseeing $18 trillion in consumer debt right now to make sure millions of Americans aren’t getting ripped off’”

Over the weekend, House Republicans stood idly by as President Trump Musk “effectively pulled [the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau] off the street, prevent[ing it] from providing oversight over big banks, payday lenders and other financial institutions that could be hurting consumers.” The agency, which was established to safeguard Americans from abusive and shady business practices, has refunded $3.3 billion to average Americans taken advantage of by large corporations that put profit over people.

DCCC Communications Director Courtney Rice:
“This is the opposite of lowering costs. Unfortunately for voters, House Republicans are too scared of an unelected billionaire to stand up for working families and for an agency dedicated to putting money back in people’s pockets.”
