This week Michiganders learned that, thanks to House Democrats, the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law is funding a $1 billion investment in the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative. These critical investments will directly address toxic pollution and invasive species and preserve and strengthen waterways in Michigan for generations.
Cleanup efforts in western Michigan alone include:
-
The Kalamazoo River, where PCBs from paper mills have contaminated sediment as well as fish and other animals.
-
Muskegon Lake, which has had sediments contaminated with petroleum, mercury, lead and other heavy metals from industry.
Peter Meijer voted against these investments.
“Instead of supporting bipartisan infrastructure investments to protect clean water for Michigan’s third congressional district, Peter Meijer chose to side with his Washington party leaders and block funding for the Great Lakes,” said DCCC spokesperson Elena Kuhn. “The Great Lakes are a way of life, and West Michiganders won’t soon forget Meijer tried to stand in the way of these critical investments.”
