Happy Birthday Speaker Ryan – Why Did You Vote Against the Fair Pay Act?

On the seventh anniversary of President Obama signing the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, don’t expect Speaker Paul Ryan to join in celebrating the historic legislation aimed at closing our country’s gender pay gap. In 2009, Ryan joined his House Republican colleagues in voting “no” on the bill. He later called the groundbreaking legislation “some obscure vote.”

“The anniversary of the Lilly Ledbetter Act is yet another reminder that Speaker Ryan’s claimed interest in ‘expanding opportunities’ rings hollow,” said Meredith Kelly of the DCCC.  “Paul Ryan proudly voted against giving women the opportunity to earn equal pay for equal work in 2009, and House Republicans’ crusade against women’s health and economic security continues to this day, with their continued attempts to block women’s access to life-saving health services.”

To celebrate Paul Ryan’s birthday, the women of the DCCC would like to invite Speaker Ryan to dinner, where we will happily treat him to 78 percent of the tab to thank him for voting against the Lilly Ledbetter Act,” added Christie Stephenson of the DCCC.
