Harder Delivers Real Investments for Local Police and Public Safety

“The project was made possible by more than $391,000 in federal funding secured in June by Rep. Josh Harder”

Congressman Josh Harder is continuing to show up for the Valley by delivering federal funding and new legislation to strengthen local law enforcement and improve public safety.

Thanks to Harder’s work on the House Appropriations Committee, the Tracy Police Department is rolling out new police dispatch technology to speed emergency response, protect families and stop crime. Harder previously delivered funding for Tracy’s license plate reader network, which now feeds directly into the new system.

Harder is also advocating for new legislation that would bolster law enforcement support – incentivizing officer retention, expanding mental health resources and offering tuition assistance for officers pursuing certain graduate degrees.

DCCC Spokesperson Anna Elsasser:
“While D.C. Republicans vote to slash local law enforcement resources, Congressman Josh Harder is actually delivering results. From securing federal dollars for cutting-edge crime-fighting tools to championing legislation that supports local law enforcement, Harder is proving once again he’ll always put the Valley first.”

  • The Tracy Police Department has unveiled its newest crime-fighting tool: a “Real Time Information Center” designed to give officers faster access to critical data.
  • Law enforcement leaders from across the region gathered Tuesday for a demonstration of the new hub, which connects more than 113 cameras, including license plate readers and 360-degree cameras. Tracy Police Captain Luis Mejia said…”Now we’re gonna be able to actually look at real time information. We’re gonna be pro-active versus reactive.”
  • The center is intended to process information quickly, giving officers responding to emergencies real-time updates. Mejia said the goal is to improve response speed, effectiveness, and officer safety.
  • The project was made possible by more than $391,000 in federal funding secured in June by Rep. Josh Harder, D-Tracy. Harder also helped secure funding in 2022 for the department’s license plate reader technology, which will feed data into the new center.
  • “I think folks can be reassured that somebody is watching out for them,” Harder said.
  • Harder is now pushing new legislation aimed at bolstering law enforcement support. The proposal includes retention bonuses to keep existing officers, funding for mental health resources, and up to $10,000 in tuition assistance for officers pursuing graduate studies in mental health, public health, or social work.
  • Tracy Police officials said the Real Time Information Center is just the beginning, with plans to expand staffing, add more cameras, and eventually incorporate artificial intelligence. Harder’s proposed legislation has been introduced and is moving through Congress.
