Over the weekend, the Albuquerque Journal endorsed its choice to represent one of the most competitive districts in the country: Gabe Vasquez for New Mexico’s 2nd district. The board credited Vasquez for consistently funding police as a member of the Las Cruces City Council and having both the plan and the experience to bring ‘economic empowerment’ to the 2nd district.
In contrast, the Albuquerque Journal did not mince words over the 2nd’s current incumbent: MAGA Republican Yvette Herrell. Herrell, who in her first major vote in Congress opposed certifying the results of the 2020 election, has abandoned her district time and time again for the most extreme elements of her party.
As the Journal notes, instead of being the problem solver New Mexicans deserve, Herrell routinely opposes bipartisan reforms and investments to boost New Mexico’s economy. This year, Herrell voted against both the Inflation Reduction Act and the CHIPS and Science Act, which would lower costs and create jobs locally. After a local tragedy, she could not even bring herself to support funding to compensate victims of New Mexico’s largest wildfire.
Maddy Mundy, DCCC Spokesperson:
“MAGA Republican Yvette Herrell stood in the way of job-creating, cost-reducing investments desperately needed by New Mexico families. Instead, she tethered herself to dangerous and anti-democratic factions within her own party – attacking New Mexicans’ sacred rights and economic opportunities. Herrell’s disastrous first term in Congress is all the evidence New Mexicans need to kick this extremist out of office.”
