High Gas Prices Become a Midterm Warning Sign for Jim Desmond [CNN]

As gas prices in California surge to nearly $6 per gallon, CNN highlighted Trump-backed Jim Desmond’s out-of-touch response: dismissing rising costs for working families as “no pain no gain.”

CNN writes“In a midterm election that will likely be decided by how voters feel about the economy, Republicans are grappling with how to discuss the war in Iran and its impact on fuel costs.”

Desmond has already failed that test: Days after launching his campaign, he defended rising costs from the war, saying “President Trump is right.” As the conflict now drains $1 billion a day from taxpayers, Desmond doubled down: “I support” it. He then tried to wave off skyrocketing gas prices claiming they’ll just “go away” – while admitting it’s “bloody murder when the president’s actions…[cause] the gas prices to go up.”

  • Republicans had spent the weeks before the war touting lower prices under President Donald Trump. Now, with the national average for gas rising above $4 a gallon for the first time since 2022 and Trump’s economic approval ratings hitting a record low, Democrats are seeking to tie the war to their broader affordability message, arguing that Republicans are more focused on foreign affairs than reducing costs at home.
  • The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee…started running digital ads last month in all of their 44 target districts blaming congressional Republicans for higher gas prices.
  • Jim Desmond defended the war effort days after he launched his campaign…No pain, no gain,” Desmond said during an interview on Real America News. “It’s unfortunate that oil prices are going up, but I do believe…President Trump is right…”

DCCC Spokesperson Anna Elsasser:
“While families across Southern California are getting crushed by rising gas prices, Jim Desmond says ‘no pain, no gain.’ He’s made it clear he’ll stand with Donald Trump no matter the cost – even when it means higher prices for the people he wants to represent.”
