The “One Big, Beautiful Bill Act” slashed $1 trillion in Medicaid in order to give trillions in tax breaks for the ultra-wealthy and a slush fund for lawless, unaccountable ICE agents.
As a result, hospitals across the country are shutting their doors. In Iowa, MercyOne is closing its clinic in Ottumwa and laying off dozens of staffers. In a statement to CNN, MercyOne cited the Big Ugly Law as a reason for its closures.
Some figures estimate a total of 10 million Americans will go uninsured as a result of the bill’s passage. Compounding the issue is Republican refusal to extend the ACA tax credits, leaving 2 million fewer people without insurance this year.
The political implications could be astronomical for House Republicans, CNN reports. “It’s an issue for a series of high-stakes races across all these states that could help decide control of Congress this fall.”
DCCC Spokesperson Justin Chermol:
“Vulnerable House Republicans voted to crush hospitals across the nation to deliver massive tax breaks to GOP billionaire donors. And this is the bill they want to campaign on ahead of November? Get real.”
