House Democrats Fight to Protect Safe Ballot Access in Illinois

Republicans play politics, endangering health and safety of 8 million Illinois voters

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee moved to intervene in a lawsuit in Illinois to protect voters’ ability to safely access the ballot through vote-by-mail measures recently implemented by the state. These measures include sending mail-in-ballot applications to registered voters and establishing secure ballot drop boxes for the November election.

House Democrats’ legal action comes as Republicans sue to block over 8 million active registered voters in the state from safely accessing the vote via a mail-in ballot during the COVID-19 pandemic.

House Democrats also intervened yesterday in a lawsuit in New Jersey against GOP attempts to undermine similar vote-by-mail measures.

Statement from DCCC Chairwoman Cheri Bustos:

“Republicans are playing politics and risking the lives of Illinoisans by forcing them to choose between exercising their right to vote or the health and safety of themselves and their families. All Americans deserve fair and unfettered access to the ballot box, and Democrats will fight to ensure that everyone in my home state of Illinois can safely make their voices heard as Washington Republicans attempt to undermine our free, fair and safe election.”
