Washington Republicans split as McCarthy runs back to Trump, flopping on accountability for inciting insurrection, disgruntled House GOP privately speak out as donors flee
Even House Republicans are (anonymously) calling out Kevin McCarthy for his flip-flop on holding Trump accountable after inciting an insurrection at the Capitol, resulting in the death of a Capitol Police Officer. With one GOP member asking, “Will the real Kevin McCarthy please stand up?” according to a report from Politico published Tuesday.
But this is the real Kevin McCarthy, running back to Trump’s good side even as donors vow to flee the GOP. McCarthy (and most Washington Republicans) can’t seem to kick their Trump habit – the majority of their caucus voted against certifying millions of Americans’ votes, furthering Trump’s baseless voter fraud claims.
After losing the House majority twice and a double whammy in Georgia this Fall, Washington Republicans are stuck with Minority Leader McCarthy at the helm of the House GOP’s future.
“While McCarthy runs back to Trump, Washington Republicans are fighting over whether to protect the integrity of American democracy or side with a QAnon mob that staged an insurrection at the United States Capitol. In the face of desperate, acts to undermine our democracy Minority Leader McCarthy and his caucus is offering the American people more of the same cowardice,” said DCCC Spokesperson Chris Taylor.
