Today, House Democrats passed the Respect for Marriage Act to protect marriage equality, following the Supreme Court’s demonstrated willingness to throw away precedent and Justice Clarence Thomas’ threat to overturn Americans’ right to marry whomever they love. Make no mistake: this vote shows just how dangerous Republicans are and the threat they pose to the freedoms we have fought for.
This vote comes at a time when:
-
The vast majority of House Republican voted against the Equality Act, legislation that would ban discrimination against people based on sexual orientation.
-
NRCC Chair and homophobe Tom Emmer avoids defending his abysmal record of likening gay relationships to beastiality, changing a bill’s language in order to explicitly ban LGBTQ+ couples from using a surrogate mother, and supporting groups that affirmed the practice of Muslim countries executing LGBTQ+ individuals.
-
The NRCC attempts to fundraise off Justice Thomas, following his vow to overturn Obergefell if given the chance.
-
Republican Senator Ted Cruz calls Obergefell, the decision that affirmed same-sex couples’ right to marry, “clearly wrong.”
“The GOP isn’t hiding any cards: The majority of Republicans are unwilling to protect the right to marry whomever we want, are willing to throw away precedent and dictate how we are allowed to express our freedoms,” said DCCC spokesperson Tommy Garcia. “Every freedom is on the ballot and that is why voters will turn out to vote for Democrats who will protect our rights.”
